Pharmacy Reference Center

The Pharmacy Reference Center provides pharmaceutical coding details in one convenient location. The interactive interface lets you view and filter search results, perform billing calculations, view policies, and drill down to specific code details.

When you search for a pharmacy item, the system leverages three sources to find results: CMS, FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and the FinThrive BP Catalog.

Tip: By default only CMS and FDA results display.

  1. In the search field, enter a: code, drug, drug name, manufacturer, or NDC number.
  2. Click Search. The results display in the Search Results grid. NDC and Standard Codes are hyperlinked so you can drill down to further coding information in the Details panel.

    Hover over the video to show the playback bar. Click the expand icon to view the video at full screen.

A Word About Search Results

CMS and FDA results display by default. The BP Catalog count still displays. To see BP Catalog results, select the check box. When selected, the following columns display in the Search Results grid: StdCode, Technical Description, Rev Code, Non-Covered, and CPT. BP Catalog results now only display when applicable.

The Details panel gives you further information on selected NDC or standard codes. When you are viewing search results, NCD codes and Standard Codes are hyperlinked.

How Does It Work?

  1. In the Search Results grid, click an NDC or Std Code. The Details panel expands and the Search Results panel collapses.

    Note: To return to the original search results, click the expand arrow in the upper right corner of the (collapsed) Search Results panel.

  2. The Details panel to contains many sections that can be customized in My Reference Center:

    Note: All sections are expanded by default. You can collapse them individually, or all at once by clicking Collapse All or Expand All.

Refine Your Search lets you filter search results to drill down to specific data.

Note: The panel is expanded by default, but you can collapse it at any time.

Steps

  1. After you have performed a pharmacy code search you can either:
    • Select a Source (CMS, FDA, Bp Catalog) check box to filter for only that source.
    • Enter criteria into one of the editable fields (HCPCS, Rev Code, CPT, Trade Name, Firm Name). The Search Results grid adjusts.

Pharmacy Reference Detail

This icon navigates you back to the Pharmacy Reference Center when you open a new page, i.e. the Policies page.

Example

  1. From the Pharmacy Reference Center, click . The Policies page opens in the same tab.

  2. Click to return to the Pharmacy Reference Center.

LCD/NCD Code Links

This icon is enabled when there are available policies for the selected CPT/HCPCS code.

  1. Go to the Pharmacy Reference Center.

  2. Enter a pharmacy code into the Search field and click Search.

  3. Click in the toolbar. The Policies page opens in the same tab with the default set to LCD policies.

  1. (Optional) Click to return to the Pharmacy or Supply Reference Center.

  		•

    If you see the message, No policy edits for the selected Payor/State, this means there are no medical necessity edits for the selected policy. This does not mean that there is no policy information.

    • Billing Calculator

    The Billing Calculator icon is enabled when a HCPCS code contains a billing calculation. The billing calculator lets you calculate the billing unit based on the HCPCS code dosage provided by CMS.

    1. Click in the icon bar. The Billing Calculator page opens in the same tab.
    2. Select a dosage and unit of measure from the drop-down menu. The calculation auto-populates.

      Note: The available dosage/unit options include the most commonly used dosages and units available for the requested drug in our database and are not editable today.

    3. Click Clear to reset the calculator.
    4. Click to return to the Pharmacy Reference Center page.

    Clinic/User Notes

    Add or update a code as a Clinic or User note for the selected facility. Clinic notes are visible to all users in the respective facility. User notes are visible only to the respective user.

    1. Click . The Pharmacy Reference Center Notes form displays with the selected CPT/HCPCS code listed in the title.

    Note: If there is already a note for the selected code, the icon contains a red check mark: .

    1. Enter or update a Clinic or User note.

    2. Click Add. A confirmation notification displays alerting that your note was saved successfully.

    3. Click OK.

    4. Click Close.

    5. (Optional) To view all of your saved notes, go to Setup > Notes. Your saved notes are displayed categorically by the Knowledge Source page.

    Save as Favorite

    Add a code from User or Clinic favorites. Clinic favorites are visible to all users within the selected facility. User favorites are visible only for the respective user.

    1. Click . The Pharmacy Reference Center Notes form displays with the selected CPT/HCPCS code listed in the title.

    2. Select the check box to save as Clinic or User favorite.

    1. Enter a note.

    2. Click Add. A confirmation notification displays alerting that your note/favorite was saved successfully.

    3. Click OK.

    4. Click Close.

    5. (Optional) To view all of your favorites go to Setup>Notes. Saved favorites display in the Favorites column.

    Education Courses

    Education Courses give users who have purchased an Education Bundle license to access related courses via the Knowledge Source interface!

    Note: An additional license is required for access and not all Education courses are available in KnowlegeSource. The Pharmacy Reference Center Education Courses require the Edu Pharmacology User role (in Admin) as well as access to the FinThriveEducation Clinical Foundations: Pharmacology courses.

    1. Click Education Courses. The drop-down opens displaying the available courses:

      • Clinical Foundations: Pharmacology - An Introduction

      • Clinical Foundations: Pharmacology - Drug Toxicity

      • Clinical Foundations: Pharmacology - How to Use a Drug Reference

    2. Select a course. The system navigates you to the FinThrive Education interface.

      Note: If you are not logged in to FinThrive Education, you are navigated to the login page. If you are logged in, you are navigated to the course page.

    3. To launch the course, click the course name next to in the Lesson section. The course lesson page opens.

    4. Click Enter. The course opens in a new window.
