POA Exempt Codes

POA or Present on Admission indicators relay whether a medical condition was existent with the patient at the time they were admitted to a facility. This is opposed to a hospital acquired condition. Some ICD-10 CM codes are exempt from reporting a POA indicator on claims. In these instances, the POA icon is available in the icon bar. If the selected ICD-10 CM code is not POA exempt, the icon is disabled. The UB-04 indicator for exempt POA codes is 1.

CMS releases a yearly list of current POA exempt codes. These codes are accessible via the POA icon on the ICD-10 CM Detail page.
