Revenue Codes
Use this procedure to view Revenue Codes.
Note: Most revenue codes are appropriate for Facility use. Those revenue codes intended for Professional use contain the word Professional in their title.
Procedure
- Type a code in the Search field. You can also select a code from Search.
- Select the Revenue Codes icon.
The detail page opens.
- Click on a code in the Rev column to open a new tab that shows you Revenue Code details.
- From the details page, you can see all available information about your selected revenue code including code description, abbreviation, category, additional notes, and the date that the code became effective. If the code has expired, that date is also shown.
- You can also see all HCPCS associated with this Revenue Code by clicking the
button found just under your open tabs within KnowledgeSource.
Note: The numerical list of revenue codes provided in CodeBase under the R icon are disclaimed as suggestions only, and may not be appropriate for every Medicare contractor. CMS states in the Claims Processing Manual, Chapter 4, Section 20, that facilities are to report the revenue code matching the cost center where the services are provided. "Generally, CMS does not instruct hospitals on the assignment of HCPCS codes to revenue codes for services provided under OPPS since hospitals’ assignment of cost vary. Where explicit instructions are not provided, providers should report their charges under the revenue code that will result in the charges being assigned to the same cost center to which the cost of those services are assigned in the cost report."
Example:
Based on this CMS guidance, if CMS provides a specific revenue code(s), FinThrive may recommend assigning those as the recommended code. Additionally, depending on the type of service, FinThrive may recommend assigning the revenue code based upon the type of service if a specific code is not recommended by CMS. For example, radiology procedures would fall within the 32X series of codes, laboratory in the 30X, etc. Individual contractors may also determine that for a specific type of service they wish a particular revenue code reported, and that may not be reflected in CodeBase, as it is not a national recommendation for all contractors.
